The Blackamore Family of Bath.
An illustrated look back at their work.

THE WEB FRESHFORD SITE

This article was originally to be on William Blackamore, who produced a number of detailed ink drawings of Bath, mainly in 1782. The Bath Record Office, Victoria Gallery and Building of Bath Museum have number of views by him in their collections. They provide a wonderful unique images of areas of Bath that were not recorded by Thomas Malton and Robins. I tried to find out more about this gentleman with the unusual surname, but found little on him. Investigating further afield I soon tracked down a Matthew and James Blackamore who were brothers and Surveyors. I have come to the conclusion until I find further information that William was a brother who worked in the same field as them. There is a tremendous similarity in their drawings, a number of which are displayed here. I am sure there is still more to find out about the family. There are a number of drawingsby Maria, the daughter of James, in the same distinctive style in the 1800s of Exeter and Devon. Another connection is that of John Edwards Blackamore who in December 1775 married Elizabeth Upjohn in Exeter. This may be a link to James and William Upjohn who were Surveyors In Shaftesbury. They produced Estate maps which were very similar to the Blackamores in Dorset at the same time.
I am quite confident that they originated from Long Bennington, near Newark on Trent in Lincolnshire. This is mainly because of their unusual name whic is prominent in this village and some of the earlist maps were drawn in this area (Map of Fulsby Wood, by James Blackamore. 1756 Lincolnshire Archives, RA/2/B/20).Their next siteing is in 1759 in Reading , Berkshire, where Matthew appears in a list of Freemasons as well as providing the drawing for the " North View of the Gateway in the Forbury as before demolished".

Pictures by William Blackamore are very distinctive and have a degree of Naiveity about them, having no figures. Each one appears to be unique and supply a rare view of a number of buildings and Streets in Bath at the end of the 18th Century. There are also several views outside the city that I have since found. If any one has located other views by him I would be grateful to be informed at neil@freshford.com.
Mathew Blackamore was a Surveyor living in Exeter from at least 1763. There is reference to him being formerly of Reading in Berkshire. He is shown as marrying Ann Edwards at Loders in Dorset in 1772. The Devon Record Office have a number of plans that he undertook fro 1763 until 1775. The following year he appears in the London Gazette as in debt and being in SouthGate Prison in Exeter. He is described as late of Exeter, land Surveyor and school master.
James Blackamore was a Surveyor living In Taunton, Somerset from at least 1774 until 1781 when he is described as a Land Surveyor in a Conveyance with Thomas Newth of the parish of Weston for a house in Walcot Street. There are a number of Estate plans by him in the Somerset Record Office mainly for Lord Poulett of Hinton House. Lamport Hall, Northamptonshire by James Blackmore, 1761.

The Upper Assembly Rooms, opened in 1771, were known as the New Rooms, to distinguish them from the older Assembly Rooms near the Abbey. With the building of the Circus and Royal Crescent the new ‘upper town’ became Bath’s most fashionable area.
‘Assemblies’ were evening entertainments at which dancing, card playing and tea drinking all went on at the same time - hence the layout of the New Rooms, with a room for each activity.(Victoria Art Gallery).

The earliest-known drawing school in Exeter was opened by map makers Matthew Blackamore and his brother James in Fore Street in 1763 and was still active in 1789. This was a technical school but, reflecting the growth in art and drawing as a leisure interest among Exeter’s genteel families, it diversified over the coming decade. The Blackamores added a writing school in 1768 and by 1770 were also teaching mixing and preparation of watercolours. In 1775 their premises was being used for portrait painting, and although industrial drawing was still their prime business, one advert was addressed exclusively to “the Ladies and Gentlemen of the City of Exeter”.
